Your Path to Driving: Theory & EDT

Learning to drive in Ireland involves two key stages: passing your Driver Theory Test and completing your Essential Driver Training (EDT). This page provides a clear overview of both, helping you understand what’s required and how we can support you every step of the way.

1. The Driver Theory Test

What is the Driver Theory Test?

The Driver Theory Test is a computer-based test that assesses your knowledge of road safety, traffic laws, and good driving practices. It’s the first step towards obtaining your learner permit.

Key Information

  • Purpose: To ensure you have a solid understanding of the rules of the road before you begin practical driving lessons.
  • Format: Multiple-choice questions based on the official Rules of the Road book.
  • Booking: Book your test online through the Road Safety Authority (RSA) website (theorytest.ie).
  • Preparation: Thoroughly study the Rules of the Road book and utilise online practice tests. We can also offer advice and resources to help you prepare effectively.
  • Passing: You must achieve a minimum score to pass the test.
  • What to bring: Your valid identification.

Helpful Tips for Success

  • Study Regularly: Don’t cram! Consistent study is more effective.
  • Practice Tests: Familiarise yourself with the test format and question types.
  • Understand, Don’t Just Memorise: Focus on understanding the concepts behind the rules.
  • Stay Calm: Manage your anxiety during the test.

2. Essential Driver Training (EDT)
